THIS IS FRASER ISLAND
A sand island that builds and collapses into fast moving shapes. A place where nothing is constant apart from adventure and exploration.
Well, OK, there is one constant, and that’s the intense local dreaming culture. It’s a place where you know you’re driving on sacred land as soon as the barge deposits you here. Editor O’Keefe gives a bit more scope on this with a wild piece of research on the local bushrangers of yesteryear.
Now that the foundations have been laid, it’s time to take a decent look around the island, namely with a touring guide of a dozen of Fraser’s best camping and driving nodes.
Carlisle Rogers also takes us on a monsoonal 4WD mission to the island, and when the storms clear Sean Scott gives us the flipside, a blinding world of greens, golds and blues.
• Legendary bush artist Peter Coad
• The best in 4WD drawers and storage
• A lifetime of Fraser Island fishing
