Building Ghost

Carlisle’s 79 Series dual cab Cruiser, Ghost, was a longtime dream realised.

To survive the ultimate journey across Australia, it would need to travel a distance of more than 8,000kms through the heart of the continent, over 60 days, from Coast to Coast. It would need to tackle every terrain and obstacle in its way, while storing enough equipment and food to survive desert crossings and some of the most remote areas on the planet.

Building Ghost
The man at the Toyota dealership said there weren’t any in the country, but there might be one on a boat. I was desperate to get a new truck built in time to start filming in August. It was the beginning of July. When the truck arrived it was naked. No tray, nothing much to look at. The Toyota 70 Series is a workhorse, a square steel frame built around the sexiest diesel engine ever built, the 4.5L V8 intercooled turbo-diesel. To turn it into something that could carry all of the gear necessary to survive endless expeditions into the heart of the outback would be an expedition in itself. To do it in a month would just be insane. Careful planning would be required, and knowing exactly what I wanted from the start. I didn’t want to be adding stuff to the truck later on, changing things around. I wanted to solve design problems before they existed, to ensure the 12V system, engine upgrades, suspension work, custom canopy and everything else all worked together flawlessly.
